On a mean weekend, The Guardian receives round 12,000 pictures from Premier League matches by way of its employees, company and contributor photographers. Thatâ€™s virtually half one million pictures per season. Some seize extraordinary pleasure and despair; some bear witness to defining moments within the title race; some owe enormously to the creativity of the women and men behind the lenses; and a few, like this primary one from August, function the uncommon however all the time amusing sight of a referee almost getting thwacked by a ball.
